Are annual reports an annual headache?

It’s coming up for that time of year again which many people dread.

Time to write their company or organisation’s Annual Report.

 

Why are they so important?

The annual report is an integral part to any organisation’s corporate communication strategy. It provides an opportunity to review the organisation’s activity and performance to employees, partners, customers, users, suppliers, backers, investors, funders and colleagues; basically anyone who may have an interest in your work.

Essentially it is the best source of information about the business performance and financial well-being of a business.

What should an annual report cover?

In short, it should be a review of the business operations and the financial position. And with that they should be focused and not shy away from giving a clear and accurate message and picture of how the organisation has fared and currently stands.

An interesting aspect I have noticed over the last few years is that the more traditional format of an annual report continues to change with the greater use of digital platforms and design. It also means the report content is showing change too and as result it brings an even stronger emphasis on organisations and the people behind compiling the reports to convey their story in a more engaging fashion.

Putting together an annual report is no mean task and can be quite time consuming and stressful. There is a lot to organise from working out a production timetable, determining the key messages, agreeing a structure, to establishing the content for each page and who will be contributing to it (and getting that information supplied and on time).
